To be able to repeat as a state champion, you must first get back to the title game.
It`s one of those `easier said than done` statements.
In Triple-A football, Bismarck High is looking for back-to-back titles, but first the Demons must not over-look West Fargo on Saturday.
"This time of the year you`re going to run into nothing but good football teams," says Mark Gibson, the Bismarck head coach.
It`s fair to say West Fargo falls into that category, the Packers scored with 2.7-seconds to go last week to beat Minot in the quarterfinals.
BH.S bested Fargo North to advance to the semi`s.
"West Fargo is going to be a lot like North," says Bismarck senior Skye Miller. "They run the same offense so our defense is going to be keyed in kind of the same as last week but I think we got a lot more to work on defense this week."
Gibson agrees.
"I though last week, more than anything, we got exposed a little bit," he says. "There was some things we didn`t do very well and some things we got to correct because North runs the same offense as West Fargo."
The Packers may run the same offense, but they`re better than North due to one key player.
"They`re got a quarterback who`s playing outstanding right now," says Gibson. "He can run and he can throw it, he`s patient, I think I`ve also been really impressed with our running game."
But when you`re talking offense, Bismarck is the highest scoring Triple-"A" in the state.
"Our offense, we`ve meshed pretty well this year, chemistry is good, our line is opening some tremendous holes," says Bismarck senior Jake Miller. "We got some great quarterback play and we`ve just kind of been clicking."
The Demons have been a big play, quick strike team, longer, more physical drives would be preferred against the Packers.
"You`d like to say it`s be a pound week but I don`t know if we can pound it? That`s something we`d like to try to do to keep their offense off the field but the one thing with our explosiveness we haven`t been able to do that because we`ve scored so fast obviously I`m not going to complain about it," Gibson says. He says they`ll have to be happy with 4 or 5 yard gains this week, that was not the case in the regular season.
"I think last week we did things well and what we wanted to offensively," says Miller. "We have some things defensively we want changed."
Bismarck`s quarterfinal game against West Fargo starts at 1:00 at the Community Bowl on Saturday.
