The Junior from Bismarck High is ranked number two in the nation at 141 pounds. He is behind a guy from Pembroke University in North Carolina. After starting the season at 149, the move down a weight class has not always been easy.
"Cutting weight at any age at any level, any amount is no fun, but when it`s as much as I have been this year it`s just kind of grueling," Johnson said.
"He`s a big 41 pounds and it helps him at 141 and it shows cause he`s ranked number two in the nation. I think it`s good for him even though it`s a hard weight for him to make but it was mainly for the team purposes," said coach Ben Berogan.
Even though being ranked as one of the top wrestlers in the country is quite an honor, Johnson says he would prefer to go unnoticed heading into nationals.
"I started out lower in the national rankings this year, and I`m back up again and I`d almost rather have it the other way around. I`d rather not even be in there because all that hype of being in the top three, it can get to your head
Johnson and the Marauders finish up their dual schedule this Wednesday at Northern State. The Super Region Tournament is at the end of the month in Waterloo, Iowa.
