Don’t Buy It, Until We Try It: INSTA Bulb | Video

Amy Fox | 3/8/2013
If you have a closet or pantry with no lighting in it, hiring an electrician can be expensive, but there may be a way to do it all yourself, for less. You`ve probably had a closet that doesn`t have a light. It makes finding stuff pretty difficult. Even with a flashlight or bedroom light, you still can`t really see what you`re getting into.

Well, this may work out a little better for you. It`s called the INSTA Bulb. To install, just peel and stick. No electrician required.

Seems pretty easy, right? But, does it even work? Well, "Don`t Buy It, Until We Try It."

"A lot of closets don`t have them,” said Mac’s Hardware assistant manager David Kinney. “They just depend on the light from the bedrooms."

That`s why many people are turning to battery operated lights to brighten up dark spaces.

Kinney said, "You don`t need to keep them on very long, so you`re not going to run the battery down or the light or anything on that order."

So, we decided to put one of those battery operated light bulbs to the test. We pulled the INSTA Bulb out of the box. And it was time to set up.

The INSTA Bulb doesn`t have the metal base around the bottom like a regular bulb. "The bulb inside the lamp itself is just a little flashlight bulb and can take a lot of beating and everything else," explains Kinney.

There`s not much assembly required.

"It just slides right off. Here`s where the batteries go," said Kinney.

Once the batteries were in place, it was time to stick.

Kinney said, "You just peel off the sticky back and put them onto the wall or the ceiling or wherever you need to put them. Then, you just pull the string."

You`ll the INSTA bulb lights up the dark space, making easier to find things. "Once they`re set up, they`re good to go for many years," said Kinney.

The INSTA Bulb seems sturdy; it did pass the shatter-proof test. One thing I want to point out is there are actually two ways to mount it. You can either use the 3M strip or two nails. If you do use the 3M strip, use caution when taking off the INSTA bulb because the adhesive could tear the wall.

So, this week`s "Don`t Buy It, Until We Try It," earns a thumbs up.
