Codex: A Film Inspired By The Flood | Video

The Mouse River flood affected thousands of people in Minot during the summer of 2011. For one professor at Minot State University, the flood became an inspiration for a movie.

Micah Bloom rode his bike into work almost every day after the flood.

"There was all of this debris in the streets, like nails and all kinds of stuff," said Bloom.

On his ride, he came across scattered debris all over the road and on trees.

"And I started seeing them in trees, started seeing them on the road, in parking lots, in the water, in ponds and it was really a strong emotional kind of reaction."

With all of the debris he collected, he found tons and tons of books. He was so inspired by everything he recovered, he decided to make a film dedicated to the 2011 flood.

"I`ve never done a film before. So, I had to start to do some research on what was necessary. And, I also connected with some students that had some film background."

Bloom and some MSU students followed the trail of books and collected them for over a year and half. Then he decided to incorporate his findings into the post flood film, called Codex.

"In the film, at the beginning, we don`t see evidence of humans. We just see these books as if they are left behind or no one is really attending to them. So, there is some mystery about what happened to someone who is not familiar with the flood."

For those who experienced the flood, Bloom hopes this film will bring some closure.

The first showing of the film will be on Tuesday, March 5th at 7:30pm in Aleshire Theater at Minot State University and is open to the public.
