School Gets Art Grant | Video

Bismarck public schools had to cut its elementary art program in 2011, but students at Miller get to work with a real artist, thanks to one of their teachers.

Students at Miller Elementary are learning the art of book making. Each class is getting hands on experience because one of their teachers asked the North Dakota Council on the Arts for a grant.

"The grants are complicated to write. There`s lots of them out there. You just have to put a lot of time and energy into doing them but it`s worth it in the long run," said teacher Kelsi Hach.

This is the second year Hach has received the grant.

"The kids are excited when they do these art projects. They really get excited when they see the artist go into the building. We have a great response, really creative projects that come out of the classroom when they`re done."

Projects like fifth grader Kenzi Serr`s notebook. "It`s cool. It`s neat how she teaches us to do stuff so if we`re ever bored we can do these fun things."

Artist in residence, Ali LaRock, will be sharing her skills with each classroom at least twice this semester.

The school`s PTO has shown its support by matching the grant both years.
