ND Delegation Responds to Corps Decision

| 2/8/2013

A recent decision by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers about surplus water has North Dakota delegates concerned. The Corps reached an agreement to allow International Western to withdraw surplus water from Lake Sakakawea at the Thompson site located in Williams County.

Senators John Hoeven and Heidi Heitkamp, Congressman Kevin Cramer and Governor Jack Dalyrmple say it is the right decision. However, they don’t agree with the Corps charging fees for the water. The delegation says it is a violation of the 1944 Flood Control Act, which sets special conditions for managing the Missouri River.

They add that North Dakotans have a right to the water free of charge, and the Corps shouldn`t hinder their access to it.
