Sunshine Act | Video

A group of lawmakers hope to increase transparency among North Dakota`s elected officials. They say instances in the past, including members of the Public Service Commission accepting campaign contributions from groups they regulate, have caused ethical concerns. Democrats say the Sunshine Act of 2013, which consists of seven bills that promote transparency, is needed in the state.

One bill would, if passed, establish an ethics committee in the state.

"Complaints of misconduct or wrong doing can be brought to that commission and must be heard by the members of the commission. But no investigation can ensue unless the majority of the commission believes an investigation is warranted," said Grand Forks Representative Corey Mock (D).

Other bills would require that members of the legislature report certain travel expenses and disclose campaign funds.
