Backpacks for Kids | Video

Kristin Clouston | 1/11/2013

Children who may otherwise go hungry this weekend are getting enough to eat, thanks to the generosity of others. But it doesn`t happen every week. Backpacks for Kids provides food for children who are identified as being homeless.

Coordinators used to send backpacks filled with food for them every weekend, but in order to keep the program running, they`ve had to scale back to twice a month.

"The program started in 2006 with 50 bags going to two schools. This week we`re doing 474 and they`re going to and they`re going to 28 schools throughout Bismarck and Mandan," said coordinator Kristi Splichal.

Those wanting to help can donate food, backpacks or money at Community Action at 2105 Lee Avenue. Checks should be made out to Community Action with "Backpack for Kids" in the memo line.
