Truck Hits Train Near Mandan

J.R. Havens | 1/10/2013

One man is lucky to be alive after his truck hit a BNSF train this afternoon. The crashed was three miles west of Mandan on Old Highway 10. According to the Morton County Sheriff`s Department, around 12:30 this afternoon, this farm truck owned by Schatzie`s Hauling out of Baldwin was going down an icy hill at an uncontrolled crossing. The driver couldn`t stop in time and collided with an eastbound coal train. The train ripped off the front end of the truck before coming to a stop.

The Sheriff`s Department reminds drivers to be extra cautious when approaching any railroad crossing.
"Always use caution when you cross railroad tracks. Most of the time they are marked with some kind of traffic control device, in this case it was a stop sign. Either way drivers should always look both ways," said Deputy Pete Carlson.

No one was hurt in the accident. The name of the driver is being withheld until the investigation is complete.
