Record High Building Permit Value | Video

Julie Leonardi | 12/11/2012

Minot is growing and evolving every day. Dee Filkinberg, a clerk at the city inspection office, said "I just think the whole state`s exploding and just a lot of people are coming here because there is oil here."

The value of this year`s building permits may reach $300 million by the end of 2012. That`s a record high and about $100 million more than last year. Filkinberg says she`s never seen it this high in the three years she’s been here.

New hotels are being built as well as apartment buildings. "A lot of residential going up, a lot of apartment buildings that go up. MSU put up quite a few apartments for their students. So it`s not just commercial, it`s a lot of residential going up."

"The base is here. The area`s changing and growing. There are several other new businesses that are coming in and they`re all in the planning stages and stuff."

It can be easy to get a building permit if you meet all the requirements.

"You would come in and bring in your plans. You tell us what you`re going to build and then once you bring in your plans, we`ll review your plans. And then you fill out your application, turn it into the building official, he`ll take a look at it, and if it meets all the requirements it has to be then we could issue the permit to you."

The new building activity will hopefully help with the housing crunch and bring more money to the city.
