Healthy Living Today: Morning Sickness | Video

Lisa Budeau, Valley News Live | 12/6/2012

Most women would agree: Pregnancy isn`t always easy. Morning sickness is fairly common. But according to the O-B nurses at Sanford Health, being hospitalized for it isn`t.

The royal baby news broke Monday when Kate Middleton was hospitalized. Wednesday was her third day in the hospital, and reports are out that she is starting to feel better.

The palace is not releasing a lot of information. But it`s believed that Kate is not very far along.

What we do know is that she was suffering from acute morning sickness.

Kate`s severe condition is rare, but it can result in weight loss, dehydration and an imbalance of electrolytes.

All of those symptoms are serious when you are carrying a baby.

"Morning sickness is common," says Sanford Health nurse practitioner Ranelle Turman. "But her condition is not. We try to get it under control before it leads to this condition."

Turman says Kate may have been more at risk because of her low weight. She says she didn`t have the reserves to handle weight loss related to throwing up due to morning sickness.

There are medications available for pregnancy-related nausea. But there are also some over the counter remedies to help get morning sickness under control, including vitamin B6 or half a Unisom.

No matter what, health experts say it`s best to stay in contact with your doctor if you are suffering with any form of morning sickness.
