Rosie the Riveter is a cultural icon and a symbol of women`s economic power. During World War II, women took on jobs traditionally held by men, and now Bismarck women are learning trades in male dominated fields thanks to Rosie`s Boot Camp.

These gals aren`t afraid to get their hands dirty. And that`s a good thing because they`re learning the basics of welding, auto body repair, auto tech and heating and air conditioning.

"We chose the four areas that we did because of the workforce need in each of the areas," said program coordinator Paul Keidel. "Giving these women ideas of jobs that are out there and areas that need to be filled in the work force."

Some participants are interested in specific areas.

"Welding, welding," said Kim Harriman. "My father was a welder and I`d just kind of like to follow in his footsteps."

And with the right skills, she can.

"Any day in the energy industry today, there`s a large number of openings for welders," said Keidel. "And we have quite a few women that are interested in welding in the energy industry."

The women are from the Adult Learning Center and South Central High School. Many are considering these careers but one student says she`s doing it because she took auto tech in high school and loved it.

"In the small town, it was scandalous," said Sandy Wollman. "We had people tell my mother, `I can`t believe you`re letting your daughter take auto tech.` I thought, `What`s the big deal?`"

Students say this is a great opportunity, and they appreciate the chance to learn new skills. The program was made possible thanks to a $9,000 grant from the state.
