1 Killed After 2 Cars Fall Into Icy Water

| 1/5/2012

You can`t help but be amazed by the kind of weather we`re having this first week of January. There`s not much snow or ice to be seen, and while that`s good news for a lot of people, it`s not for others. In fact, it led to tragedy up near Lake Darling Dam north of Minot.

Just after one o`clock this afternoon, the Renville county sheriffs department responded to a call that two vehicles were stranded underwater.

Authorities say two cars tried to drive on a road that had been washed out and had been frozen over. An hour later, rescue boats were sent out to rescue the two people sitting on the roof of their car.

Unfortunately, a third person never emerged from the water, and searchers eventually found the body.

"Looks like the vehicles got stuck and we had three people out there and it looks like we have one fatal," said Scott Guenthner with the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

"Drivers driving on ice need to stay off of it, thats really what it amounts to," said Dwayne Anderson with the Upper Souris Wildlife Refuge.

Authorities have not released the names of those involved.
