Finally Harvesting Soybeans | Video
Retha Colclasure
11/6/2009
This week`s sunny, dry weather was just what farmers in North Dakota were waiting for.

Many of them have been out in the fields, taking advantage of every hour of sunlight they can.

One farmer in McIntosh county says he`s been waiting to start harvesting his soybeans for a month.

These beans should have been in the bin a month ago.

"We`re just running behind since last spring," says Marlow Werth.

It`s late and wet, and Werth says overall, this harvest season has just been a disaster.

"I have never seen a harvest season equate to this before," he says. "We`ve had wet harvest seasons in August and September, days are longer, has a tendency to dry out and we can resume our duties."

But that hasn`t been the case this year. He was only able to run the combine about three and a half days during the whole month of October, a number he already passed during the first full week of November.

"It feels good," Werth says. "We can`t wait to get across that finish line."

The finish line is in sight, but there are still a lot of obstacles in the way.

Farmers aren`t only up against wet harvesting conditions. They`re also up against shorter days.

"Usually when we get into October we get a little bit antsy about having short days," he says. "Now we`re in November and deer season opens. There`s an awful lot of beans to be harvested yet."

The good news, he says, is that what he`s bringing in, is a good quality, above average crop.

Werth says as close as he is to finishing harvesting his soybean crop, one heavy rain, or one snowfall, could wipe it out for good.
