Every year it happens. Men and women who aren`t very active much of the year, head out to deer hunt and land in the hospital, victims of heart attacks. It make sense. Between the miles hunters walk and the strain of hauling a deer, hunting can be strenuous.
Some tips then for hunters. Be aware of your strength and don`t overexert yourself. Let family or friends know the area you plan to be hunting and when you plan to return. Don`t go hunting alone, you never know when you`ll need a friend for medical help and bring a cell phone with you so you can get in contact with emergency services if necessary.
Interventional Cardiologist Karthik Reddy of Medcenter One says for some people hunting is similar to a stress test.
"They`re exerting themselves more than normal. They they get these symptoms of chest pain or shortness or breath. If they do, they need to stop, get rest. If their symptoms resolve, get medical help. Go to their doctors and have further testing," says Reddy.
Also, says Reddy, if you`re on medications for heart problems. Bring them with you while hunting. You never know when you`ll need them.
