New Elementary School Boundaries

| Tonight is a big night for families in the Northridge and Rita Murphy Elementary School areas. The proposed attendance boundaries, for the new Northeast elementary school, will be discussed at an informational meeting. The new school, Sunrise Elementary, is being built to ease overcrowding in the area. The Superintendent of Bismarck Public Schools says they need to decrease the enrollment by 200 students at each school. Overcrowding became a major issue 2 years ago when the All Day- Everyday Kindergarten Program went into effect. Currently the school board is considering a number of different proposals. They are hearing the most feedback from families North of 43rd, who traditionally attend Northridge, and would like to continue. The other group is families east of 83rd at Rita Murphy, who currently are not inside the boundaries but would like to be. Dr. Paul Johnson, the Superintendent of Bismarck Public Schools, says right now it is a balancing act for the school board. Johnson: "A proposal that the school board eventually approves is going to have to get students out of those schools, now this is the bottom line in my opinion. So yes, I think we need to listen to families and if we can we need to accommodate their wishes. On the other hand, leaving those schools at 700 students isn`t an option because we`re effecting the education of many other students and so that`s the balance the school board has to consider." The meeting is tonight at 7 pm at Century High School. Parents in the affected area are invited. At the meeting, the software program used to move the boundary lines, will be demonstrated. The school board hopes to make a final decision at their next meeting, November 9th. The school is scheduled to open Fall 2010. |
