Try My Job: Knitter | Video
Alan Miller
11/2/2009
There are plenty of differences between men and women, but one becomes apparent when watching television.

Men learn to master all the buttons on the remote control, while women try to keep busy even while relaxing.

Many ladies take up knitting. Most men don`t.

But I ventured into that territory recently.

Sue Lacher leads the team that knits baby caps for St. Alexius hospital. My first choice is to go with either wood or metal needles.

"Metal needles are slipperier," Lacher says.

So if I want to get a grip on the task, I have to go with wood. Step one might be familiar to sportsmen, but in this case, casting is lining up your first row of stitches.

"Now you`re going to go around your thumb," Lacher instructs me. "Yep. Over your index finger. And you`re just gonna hold that down with your middle finger."

Can it really be that easy?

"Through the thumb. Oooh, you`re looking good. Okay. Then go around this thing," she says.

So far I`m a model of inconsistency. But Lacher is ready to step in at the drop of a hat, or the drop of a needle.

However, a good teacher can help almost anyone.

"Now just pull on those two. Oh, yo ho ho," Lacher says. "You can do it. You can do it. No, no, no, no, no."

So much for my first row. Now comes the knitting part, which is supposed to be easier. At least that`s what she tells me.

Maybe it`s just me, but does knitting force you to keep your mouth open?

"Now, you can hold up your knitting and I`ll hold up mine," she says.

It took me about an hour to knit what might be big enough to be a scarf for a bumblebee.

Perhaps it would be easier if I watched a football game at the same time and didn`t concentrate so much.

If you`d like me to try your job, send me an e-mail or call me at 255-8184.
