A fifth grader at LaVille Elementary in South Bend, Indiana is being called a hero for his courageous and brave actions.
He pulled his brother and cousin out of the way of a speeding car. It happened last week while they were crossing the street to get on the school bus but the car didn`t stop.
5th grader Mitchell Hageniers acted quickly and saved two members of his family.
“I hurried up and was thinking fast,” says Mitchell.
“A lot of kids his age probably wouldn’t have thought as quickly as he did, probably saved some lives,” says Mitchell’s teacher Paul Davis.
The three boys say they saw several other cars stop for the bus but one car did not. The three were crossing the street when Mitchell heard the engine. Mitchell immediately pushed the two boys back away from the road out of harm’s way.
In fact the bus driver said the car was driving so fast he didn’t have time to warn the children not to cross the road.
“It was split second thinking. He didn`t really have time to put a lot of thought into it. He just turned and acted,” says LaVille Elementary principal John Farthing.
Mitchell will be honored at a school board meeting plus an awards ceremony for what he did.
The driver is a student at LaVille High School. Since the incident her driving privileges have been taken away.
